Bishop Edgerton Roland Clarke
Pope Paul VI appointed Edgerton Roland Clarke as the first bishop of Montego Bay. Clarke was born in 1929 and was ordained a bishop upon the inauguration of the diocese of Montego Bay. He served in Montego Bay from 1967 until his election as Archbishop of the archdiocese of Kingston in 1994.
Bishop Charles H. Defour
Pope John Paul II appointed Charles H. Dufour as the next bishop of the diocese, where he served since 1996. Dufour was born in Kingston on April 15, 1940. He was ordained a priest in August 1970, and then went on to be appointed bishop and ordained bishop on Feb. 10, 1996 at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Montego Bay. He was appointed Archbishop of Kingston on April 15, 2011.
Bishop Burchell McPherson
Burchell Alexander McPherson was born in the district of Halls Delight in the cool hills of St. Andrew, Jamaica on 7 May 1951. After elementary school at Hall’s Delight, he attended high school at St. George’s College evening Extension. In 1976, at the age of 25, he converted to Catholicism. He took part in associations for Catholic youth, and was named lay administrator of the parish of St. Pius X.
In 1986 he was ordained a permanent deacon and thought that was where it would have ended. However, with the encouragement of Archbishop Samuel Carter of blessed memory, he entered St. Michael’s Seminary in 1988 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 23, 1991.
He was appointed third Bishop of the Diocese of Montego Bay on April 11, 2013 and his Episcopal Ordination and Installation occurred on June 8, 2013. In 2016, Bishop Burchell celebrated his 25th Anniversary as a priest. His motto “Service Before Self” captures his raison de etre.
In addition to being Bishop of Montego Bay, he is also involved in Food for the Poor. He was chairman of the local board of Food for the Poor for twelve years beginning 1997, later becoming a member of the board in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Currently, he is treasurer of Food for the Poor International. He is also the Patron of the Good Shepherd Foundation and sits on the Selection/Assessment Committee for the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Bishop Burchell is a member of the AEC Vocations Commission and a member – Board of Directors of the Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA).
